BMW Performance to Offer Range of X6 Equipment

BMW's X6M may be quite the performance machine, but given its $89,875 base price, it isn't within everyone's reach. That doesn't mean you can't have a quick X6, mind you. At the 2010 Geneva motor show, BMW Performance will showcase a new line of accessories, some designed to give the "sports activity vehicle" a little extra boost.

For starters, an ECU upgrade is available to both the straight six 3.5-liter and 5.0-liter V-8. The xDrive50i sees 41 more hp and an extra 37 lb-ft of torque, raising its numbers to 448 hp and 479 lb-ft, respectively. The twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder gets a 20 hp bump, bringing it to 326, and 323 more lb-ft of torque to 332. Coupled with a new lightweight exhaust system, the ECU upgrade allows both models to shave two-tenths of a second from their 0-62 mph times, allowing the I-6 to make the sprint in 6.5 seconds, and the V-8 to do the same in 5.2 seconds.

To add some extra curb appeal, BMW Performance is offering its own four-piece body kit, which vaguely resembles that on the M. The kit is body-colored, although a matte black spoiler and unusual rear window fins are also available. BMW says installing the body kit won't impede existing rear-view cameras and parking sensors. Wheels can be upgraded to 21-inch cast aluminum units featuring a "Y"-shaped spoke pattern. Inside, a set of aluminum pedals (and a matching footrest) and an Alcantara-covered performance steering wheel are also available.

The whole range of X6 accessories will be available come June, and can be purchased and installed at BMW dealers. As a result, the upgrades will be warranted, and won't void the vehicle's existing warranty.
