Quick Look: Mini Cooper S Countryman Review?

1963 Austin Mini Cooper S. 1275 cc bored to 13...Image via Wikipedia

What I like:
The Cooper S Countryman is the first Mini with four doors and all-wheel drive. The added practicality of its taller height, more accommodating interior and larger trunk make it much more useful than the regular Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper Clubman.
The extra bulk is kept well in check, so the car handles like a sports car when outfitted with the sport suspension and larger wheels. The added power of the “S” version gives the car plenty of punch. It looks great, too. In terms of style per dollar, it’s hard to beat.
What I don’t like:
This car makes too many concessions for its cute design. The speedometer and switches on the center console were a nuisance. I suppose one would adjust to them eventually. The shade for the optional glass roof is perforated, which means it doesn’t completely block out the sun. The rail system bisecting the cabin is clever, but not the best use of space. Cupholders and bins that clip to it are bulky and get in the way when trying to load the back seat with stuff—which is often required because the trunk is so small. Because of its short wheelbase and firm suspension, the Clubman skips sidewise when it hits bumps in the middle of a turn. This dynamic is quite bad on the highway—it feels like the car is getting knocked off course.
Who’s it for?
Style-conscious folks on a budget and Mini fans that have been on the fence because the regular Cooper and Clubman were too small.
Alternatives?
The Nissan Juke is worth considering, but doesn’t feel as high-quality inside.
