Honda is worried the airbag in certain models will not perform perfectly |
Honda is adding more than 378,000 cars to an existing safety recall in the United States for airbag inflation problems, the firm said.
It broadens a recall announced in late 2008 for less than 4,000 Accord and Civic sedans, and expanded in July last year to cover another 440,000 vehicles. The company said the airbags can deploy with too much pressure, causing injury.
The fresh blow to Japanese carmakers came on the same day Toyota recalled 436,000 hybrid cars over faulty brakes.
Toyota has already recalled millions of other vehicles amid accelerator and floormat problems.
We cannot be completely certain the airbag inflator will perform as designed Honda statement |
Honda said: "We cannot be completely certain that the driver's airbag inflator in the vehicles being added to this recall at this time will perform as designed."
This recall will apply to 2001 and 2002 model-year Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V and 2002 Acura TL vehicles.
The company says owners should take their vehicle to an authorised dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda.
Just last month, the Japanese carmaker recalled 650,000 Fit hatchbacks worldwide to fix a switch defect that could cause a fire.
It said the glitch could cause water to enter the power window mechanism, causing components to overheat.
The car is known as the Jazz and City in other countries. That recall affects Asia, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and North America

I like the Japanese Model Cars due to their commitment to their products , Safety and comfort. They have never patched up the defect but removed the defect irrespective of the cost. We expect more to come from any competing brands and nations to have the enhanced quality and service for a improved life style.
