Automotive;General Motors has announced plans to build the largest solar array in southeast Michigan at its Chevy Voltassembly plant. The 516-kilowatt project by DTE
Energy at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant will provide enough electricity annually to fully charge 54,750 Volts, according to the auto maker.The $3 million solar array will cover 264,000 feet and should be on line by the end of the summer.
“This array will significantly decrease energy consumption by combining solar power with ongoing efficiency tactics such as lighting and equipment upgrades and automating equipment shut-down,” said Bob Ferguson, vice president of GM Public Policy.
The installation is part of DTE Energy’s plan to install enough solar arrays on customers’ rooftops and property over the next five years to generate 15 MW of electricity.
